Some Dachshunds don’t just love to hike. They love to follow their people on all their adventures, including in a boat. A few months back we shared a story about Canadian Guest Adventureweiner Sadie. Today, her Mom shares another favorite adventure story with us………
One night around the campfire we were trying to decide what to do the next day. I saw Sadie’s lifejacket sitting on a log drying out and had the idea to rent a canoe and try to tackle the Cliff Top Trail.
After a long, peaceful night we again woke just after dawn and set off to find a marina so that we could rent a canoe. At the marina the man laughed at Sadie in her lifejacket and at the two young women standing in front of him asking to rent a canoe. Neither of us had a clue what we were doing, we had never been canoeing before.
He explained everything in great detail and sent us on our way with, what I believe, was the heaviest metal canoe ever built. Thankfully, it was the off season, so there was no one there to laugh at us as we attempted to maneuver the canoe into the water and jump in.
We finally got going and paddled around the lake for a bit, finally finding our way to a dock on the other side. Luckily for us, it was the RIGHT dock for the trail we wanted to hike.
The first part of the trail consisted of a large, metal staircase. Sadie refused to walk up it. After much coaxing on my part, and more stubbornness on hers, I carried her up. The rest of the hike was a breeze for her; she was constantly pulling at her leash and running all over the place. We reached the top after about an hour, marveling at the beauty of the lakes and surrounding forests.
We had lunch on a cliff, and then headed back towards our boat. Feeling great about the 2 km we had just hiked, we decided to tackle another trail and then have a late dinner. By the time we got back to our site she was worn out and happy.
