Idita-Walk: Team Dogventurers

Idita-Walk

I first heard of the Idita-Walk from Bunny at Tales and Tails. It was a perfect follow-up to the 30/30 challenge for us so we signed up this year. We liked organizing the 30/30 Challenge so much that we thought it would be cool to band a group of us together for this challenge too (actually, it was Beth Gizmo at Terrier Torrent suggested we do it and I just accepted). As with the 30/30 … [Read more...]

30/30 Challenge Comes to a Close

Seattle profile pic

Well, the 30/30 challenge is over. I shamefully admit that we didn't walk every day. I can say that there were several days where I REALLY didn't feel like walking but I put on my stiff uppper lip and went out anyway because I had made a commitment. I did learn a few new things during the challenge. I found it really fun (and simple) to track our route using MapMyDogWalk by Subaru. I didn't … [Read more...]

30/30 Challenge Update Week 4

P1020314A

I am still struggling to find that balance that I mentioned in the last update.  Jodi from Kol's Notes told me to stop being so hard on myself for missing a few days here and there because I was still walking more regularly in January than I had been previously. She hit it right on because I had been beating myself up about it. Since I view balance as a long-term pursuit, and finding balance can … [Read more...]

30/30 Challenge Update Weeks 2 & 3

Rufus and Porter walk

Well...I feel like we launched this challenge and then disappeared from the blogsphere. I intended to post an update every week  but I skipped over week 2. This isn't new news to me but it has definitely been brought to light again here - when you are super busy and make a new commitment, sometimes another thing on your to-do list has got to go. Your priorities have to shift sometimes even … [Read more...]

30/30 Challenge Week 1: Dogs Don’t Make Excuses

P1020303B

Well, it hasn't quite been a week since the challenge started. I was excited to start our regular walking routine (well...kind of....it's more like "committed") so we actually started the challenge a day early with a 30-minute walk on New Years Eve. When we got back from our walk, Chester and Gretel were zooming around like crazy! I am sure they can handle more than a 30-miute walk a day … [Read more...]

We Aren’t Walking Alone

30_30 badge2A

Wow. The response to our 30/30 challenge has been amazing.  In about 12 hours we had 11 other bloggers say they would take the challenge with us. When I am feeling tired and finding it hard to get out of the house I will know  that others are facing the same struggle. When we are out walking we may physically be doing it alone but will know a bunch of our friends are with us in spirit. I … [Read more...]

Take the 30/30 Challenge with Us

dsc_0006-2A

I am not big on New Years Resolutions. I don't consider this challenge to be one but because, well, it starts right after the new year you can call it one if you want. I have confessed before that, although we love nothing more than hiking or going on adventures, I pretty much drop the ball when it comes to regular, daily exercise. Oh, we DO get out for walks or jogs but don't do anything on a … [Read more...]

Taking your dog for a REAL walk

iStock_Dog Walkera_XSmall

OK.....I have kind of a rant. The point of a walk is for your dog to burn off some energy from being cooped up all day. It is to burn some calories to help them maintain a healthy weight (Significant calories can't be burned if you are not actually covering some ground). It is to help their joints stay flexible and their muscles strong. Your dog should know you mean business - a walk is actual … [Read more...]

Our Secret: Start Small and Then Go Big

DSC_0201B

You have heard us go on and on about how ingrained the stereotype of small dogs is  – of how they are often underestimated and are capable of so much more.  We even wrote a guest post about it over at Will My Dog Hate me? We get really excited every time we see a story about another small dog proving the world wrong. On our blog we share our stories and talk about the miles we have hiked … [Read more...]

Couch to 10k Training Continues…..or Not

imag0217C

This last month or so has been kind of a mess for us in the training department. We have not stuck to the couch to 10k plan very well and had to make several modifications for physical reasons and…..well, LIFE. I think that is the key to training though – to be able to listen to your bodies needs, find a way to make it fit with your life, not beat yourself up when you miss a workout or can’t … [Read more...]

How Many Calories Do You Burn Walking Your Dog?

iStock_Dog Walkera_XSmall

We are always talking about the benefits of exercising with your dog. We love to hike, and even occasionally run, with our dogs (yes, believe it or not, Dachshunds are good runners – why do you think there are so many weiner races out there?) but walking is the easiest, bet way for you and your pooch to get exercise together. We think that any basic exercise plan has to start with walking. If … [Read more...]
