Well, the 30/30 challenge is over. I shamefully admit that we didn’t walk every day. I can say that there were several days where I REALLY didn’t feel like walking but I put on my stiff uppper lip and went out anyway because I had made a commitment.
I did learn a few new things during the challenge.
I found it really fun (and simple) to track our route using MapMyDogWalk by Subaru. I didn’t do anything with the information when I got home but I looked forward to seeing the completed map on my phone once we got back home. It helped to make walking fun.
I learned that walking every day is not realistic for us….at least in winter.
I know that some of the challenge participants braved rain, sleet, snow and darkness. We think you are awesome. There we some days in Seattle that were really rainy AND cold. That is not a combination that Chester and Gretel will walk very far in. I don’t like it much either and didn’t want to fight them on those days.
We still walked more often than we had in previous months. I still want to work to incorporate more consistent activity into our routine. I just think that walking fewer times a week. and taking advantage of any good weather by walking farther on those days, is the way to go for us.
That means that our next challenge will be perfect for us: The IditaWalk! It’s an event to promote physical fitness in the spirit of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. The goal is to walk 1049 during the 59 day but it is up to you which days you walk and how long you walk on each day. We will update you periodically on our progress.
Thanks again to everyone who participated in the 30/30 challenge with us and let us know how it went for you and what you learned along the way.
Don’t forget to enter our giveaway for the awesome Doxie Valentines cups from Target if you haven’t already.
We are participating in the Monday Mischief Bog Hop today. Head on over to our host, Snoopy’s, blog to find other mischievous pets.

The 30/30 Challenge went very well for us! I use MapMyDogWalk, too, and the cool thing is that you can sync that to your Fitbit and put the data in that to figure out your activity. We walked a little more than thirty minutes every day, our route is about forty minutes long, especially in winter. It was really great for me and for Bunny!

It’s super tough to commit to everyday, especially in crappy weather. We are in the sunshine, but then I got nailed with 2 weeks of energy sapping, lung sucking bronchial crap. Life happens…..and them you do the best you can.

Good job! Y-Bo and I really had fun on this adventure and are looking forward to doing the Idita Walk as well. Thanks for motivating us to do ANY exercise at all in January!!!

Hey, you did great! You have to have a plan that works for you and if you force yourself and don’t like it you won’t stick with it. My mom is a drill sergeant so we walk 1-2 hrs no matter what each day starting first thing every morning. We love walking but there are days when one or more of us are not feeling it so we take a shorter walk…but we walk and that is the main thing. We are doing the Idita Walk too – hope to see you there!

Now you got me thinking about the ideal walk. Hmm anywhere where squirrels are. Have a marvelous Monday.
Best wishes Molly

J, you look lovely in the picture. Awww, that’s ok about the 30/30. But, we still look forward to your visit. If it’s not great weather on that day, we’ll sip something hot and watch the doggies play. Maybe this summer, a hike up a mountain? Keep up the good work with C,G,cute husband and blogging. Fun reads!

A summer hike in the mountains sounds great. I will let you know next time I am over with Chester and Gretel so we can get together before then too.

I didn’t formally participate, but did up my walking, some of it with the dogs, last month. I use runtastic on my phone to track my walking and use it to upload to a website where I have checked it. There are lots of good apps out there though.
Don’t stop now! Keep walking everybody!

Thanks for the encouragement Bruce! And thanks for following us on Twitter.

I think the fact that you tried is what counts. We didn’t participate because during the winter months, Hubby has to help and he will only do around the block (don’t worry I make up for it on the weekends!) But around our block only takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Once the longer days are here, their walks will increase to at a minimum of 30 minutes each day and double that on the weekends.
I’m going to check out the Idita-Walk and see if it’s something that works with our routine.
I commend you for running this challenge!

Sounds like you did very well. I have trouble walking in winter. Boots are just not the greatest footwear for me to walk long distances in.

I missed the ball on the 30/30 challenge. I think I may be up for the Idita-Walk one, though!

You should join us…that would be fun!

I have to say Thanks for getting the Challenge started…it got us into a routine that we both enjoy and you know that Giz & I are doing the Idita-Walk…one thing I found over the month is that the route that took us 30″ at the start was completed in less time after a couple of weeks so we progressively increased our distance…That was great proof that consistent walking really does pay off

Congrats for this undertaking and inspiring others to walk more. We didn’t participate officially because we knew we would have some days here in Canada that were too cold in January to be out for 30 minutes (we had a week of about -30 F, so our walks were short).
When you live with 2 big dogs (one with an anxiety issue) walking is a greater priority then it was when I had small dogs. To accommodate their needs I am the proud owner of a safety vest and head lamp for those early morning winter walks in the country.
Congrats again!

Give yourself credit for taking on the challenge in January. Whatever you were able to do was good for you and good for the doggies. The Iditawalk sounds like a great idea. We walk or run everyday, but if I didn’t, my two labbies would be bouncing off the walls!

It sounds like you put forward a very good effort and that is what matters!
We haven’t been walking as much as I hoped for this winter, but we’re doing the best we can under the circumstances!
