I had to head to Sequim again this weekend to work on my Grandparent’s house some more. We were watching a friend’s dog, Clancy. I took Clancy and Gretel with me and left Chester and home with S, as usual, so he had someone to keep him company.
While I was on the Edmonds-Kingston ferry boat I got an email that my appointment had been pushed back. I had a couple of hours to kill so I decided to take a side trip to visit the 1879 Point no Point Lighthouse in Hansville, WA.
I grew up near that area. I know I went there a few times as a kid but I don’t remember it. I rediscovered it last year when we were looking for a wedding venue.
The little sand point the lighthouse is sitting on got it’s name when Charles Wilkes, of the US Exploring Expedition, spotted what he thought was a substantial spit. When he realized it was smaller than he thought he named the spit Point no Point.
I wasn’t sure that dogs were allowed on the lighthouse grounds. I didn’t see any signs saying they weren’t so we went for it. After we got out of the car I saw a poop bag station and a trash can so I figured we had free reign.
The lighthouse was small and quaint.
We strolled on the beach a little. On a clear day there is a great view of the Cascade Mountains across Puget Sound.
We found a cool little driftwood arch on the beach. I suspect it was a remnant of a wedding that had been held there. Whoever thought of making an arch of driftwood was genius 🙂
The lighthouse has a marsh on one side. A saw a trail that led off into the marsh but we didn’t have time to explore it. We look forward to going back to check it out.
There is a picnic area along the access road with about 10 picnic tables and a view of the beach. It also looks like you can rent the lighthouse keeper’s quarters (pets are not allowed to stay in the rental though).
After I got home, I read more about the lighthouse park pet regulations. Apparently we weren’t supposed to be on the beach. There were no signs though and when we were there I saw two other doggies playing in the sand. They also said that pets were not allowed in the picnic area. Again, I didn’t see any signs there though. From the looks of it, dogs are only officially allowed on the lighthouse grounds.
There isn’t anything to see or do in the town Hansville itself. I heard it had “grown” in more recent years but “grown” must have meant going from nothing to a little coffee shop. It’s worth taking the detour to see the lighthouse though.

Oh nice! I would love to go visit a lighthouse with the dogs! Lighthouses are one of hubby’s favorite things and they have so many great photo opportunities. I’m glad you took the time to stop there and visit it!

I know, they are a great backdrop. That is why we are getting married at one 🙂

I wish there were more dog friendly places for well behaved dogs and responsible owners. Dachshunds seems to have the intelligence to enjoy trips like the humans. Luckily, I have hearing ear service dog, dachshund who can go anywhere with me including restaurants. Non dog people find it so offensive but it is them that are so offensive. I enjoy all these photos and trip journals you share with all of us who takes so much pleasure in reading. Thank you Chester and Gretel and your mom and dad. I lost my Gretel last March but I love that name Gretel. I had twin doxies named Heidi and Gretel and it was a great combo of German names for German dogs.

Interesting Helene. I knew Dachshunds were smart but I was never sure what kind of service dog they could be trained to be. I am sorry you lost your Gretel but glad we can bring a smile to your face with our stories and photos 🙂

Oh, gosh, I go there w/ my 4 doxies often and have always seen dogs of all kinds running around…. This is the first I’ve heard of the “no dogs” policy. Oops! Oh well, I’ll still pretend I don’t know… 🙂 Gorgeous pictures!!! And, love your blog!
AdventureJess says
Yeah, I am guessing they don’t crack down on that. If they ever said something to me I would play dumb. I man, there IS a poop station right next to the beach and no signs saying they are not allowed. Where do you live?
Mindy says
Poulsbo. You all should come out to our local PAWS WagFest event on Sunday, September 16th. Bainbridge Island – Battle Point Park. We’re going to have a weiner dog race… 🙂 Small, nothing fancy but fun! I’ll post on the facebook page when the link is up on the website.
AdventureJess says
Thanks for the invite. I will put it on my calendar and looks for you post as it gets closer. What time does it start?
Mindy says
The event is from 9am – 1pm. Love to meet you & the pups!!

Sounds like alot of places…. as long as your dog is not creating chaos, nobody’s gonna complain.

Thanks for sharing more great pics of your adventures!

Lighthouses are indeed beautiful. But the more sailing I do, the more I appreciate the important work they do in making it safe to navigate near land.
Looks like you made good use of your spare time. 🙂

The only one I have had the pleasure of experiencing from the water was the one on Alcatraz 🙂

This looks so great! I’m planning a lighthouse tour for my trip to Prince Edward Island next month! Wish I could take the pup with me. You should try and make your own drift wood arch for your wedding.
AdventureJess says
A driftwood arch would be cool but we are getting married on the grounds of a lighthouse and using the doorway as an arch. I want the lighthouse to be the focus. Here, they are using the arch to make the mountains in the distance the focus. It’s amazing though 🙂

It sure looks like a pretty place. They don’t let dogs on beaches in the state parks here. Something about being sanitary. It is too bad, there are a lot of state parks on the Great Lakes and no dogs allowed on the beaches.
AdventureJess says
Dog’s aren’t allowed on any beaches in the City of Seattle either. The rest of the state is a mixed bag…..hence our confusion. Unless there is a sign there is no real way to tell.
