Welcome to the second installment of Keeping Up With K9 Kamp!
As you may have heard, we are now official co-hosts of K9 Kamp with Kol’s Notes and Peggy’s Pet Place. K9 Kamp, a fitness challenge aimed at fighting pet obesity, happens a couple of times year. However, we believe that canine fitness should be something you work on year-round. This is where Keeping Up With K9 Kamp comes in.
Keeping Up With K9 Kamp is a series of mini-challenges that take place each month that K9 Kamp is not in session. The mini-challenges will help you keep the goal of canine fitness fresh in your mind.
I will announce a mini-challenge on the fist Friday of each month and link that post to the Fit Dog Friday Blog Hop. There will be a wrap-up post on the last Friday of each month. You are encouraged to let us know how you did if you accept the Keeping Up With K9 Kamp Challenge.*
The August 2013 Challenge
It’s simple: Try one new activity with your dog this month.
In some areas of the country it is too hot to do much with your dog outside during the day right now. For those of you who live in one of those areas, try a new indoor activity. The people who live in more mild climates, get outside and try something new.
Here are some suggestions to get you thinking:
- Hiking (to make sure you are prepared, see what I bring hiking with us)
- K9 Nosework (it’s like hide and seek for your dog)
- Agility (indoors or outdoors – balance ball, jump over something, ramps, lateral training)
- Running (start a Couch to 5k program)
- Geocaching (join Gizmo and Finn during their Geocaching challenge. It starts now and ends on Geocahing Day on August 16th. Check out their instructions on how to get started.)
- Kayaking (if you don’t own one, some rental places will let you bring your dog out on the water with you)
- Swimming (outdoor or some places have an indoor pool for dogs)
- Walking a brand-new route (yes, even this counts as a “new activity”.. Thanks to Slimdoggy for the suggestion)

*Wrap Up
The August challenge runs from Friday, August 2nd to Friday, August 30th. Any time during the month, try your new activity, write a blog post about it, and link it up to the Fit Friday Blog Hop. If you don’t have your own blog, please let us know how you did by leaving a comment on our final wrap-up post on Friday, August 30th.
The idea of K9 Kamp and these mini-challnges is to work toward a common goal and offer each other support. Please tweet and post photos using the hashtag #K9Kamp throughout the month so we can keep in touch and see what fitness means to you.
I am joining in the FitDog Friday blog hop sponsored by SlimDoggy, Peggy’s Pet Place and To Dog With Love Stop by and see what other dogs are doing to stay fit and healthy!

Great challenge. Different activities are great for dogs – not just the exercise, but the mental challenge. You can see it just by taking a different route on your daily walk – they are more interested, more engaged. This will be fun coming up with something new for Jack – he is always up for a challenge!
Jessica Rhae says
Darn….I should have suggested that. Even taking a new walking route passes as a “new activity” in my book. I think I am going to add it 🙂
Hailey and Zaphod's Lady says
That is a lot of exercise! Enjoy!
Jessica @YouDidWhatWithYourWiener says
You just pick ONE thing to try. Any activity you want. The list here is just some suggestions.
Hailey and Zaphod's Lady says
I know it is one – training for a 5 k is a lot of exercise!
Jessica Rhae says
Well, that is for the very ambitious 🙂 The challenge would be to START running. I listed that program because it is a great place to start if you have never run before (will help prevent injuries).
GizmoGeodog says
Well we’ve got a head start on this mini-challenge already…we had a Doggie Social Club swim last Saturday and it was so much fun I’ve scheduled another for tomorrow…I guess the photos were good, as twice the number of dogs and humans have signed up for this one…I’d really like Gizmo to get comfortable in the water…Nosework is another activity I have on my list
Christine and Riley says
What a great challenge this month!! We will definitely be incorporating it into our new program!!
Jackie Bouchard says
Great suggestions! Thanks!
Kolchak, Felix & Jodi says
I’m excited for this! My original plan had been to try biking with the dogs running, but now that Felix has a torn ACL, he’ll be sitting this one out. His “new activity” is going to be some really cautious rehab work. #YAY
I might still try biking with Koly or maybe we’ll try something altogether different. It will be an adventure!
BoingyDog says
Very cool! Thanks for the post!
Pup Fan says
Hmmm… I’ll have to think about what Tavish and I can do!
Jan K says
I like the flexibility of this one. Half the fun will be deciding what to do!
emma says
I will put my doggy thinking cap on, but I am betting it will be a new walking route since I don’t do much alone, Katie is always along and she is starting to limit real exciting activities.
Angel says
What do you use to flavor the water? These are all great hiking tips. Thank you
Jessica Rhae says
I use no sodium chicken broth or K( GoDog sports drink when we are hiking. Sorry for the short response. We are on a road trip vacation 🙂
Angel says
No problem thanks for the water tip! I have a stubborn doxie Enjoy your vacation!
chris and Charlie says
Well I’ve missed half the challenge but I’ll be back in Maine in a few days and me and charlie will gladly try something new!
