Over the first couple of months I learned that, unlike Chester, she didn’t go nuts when she saw a cat around the neighborhood. In fact she didn’t even really seem to get the concept of kitty. She would chase leaves, freak out on squirrels and growl and the occasional kid but when she saw a cat she didn’t even give it a second look.
This was just her reaction to cats around the neighborhood though. She had never been in close proximity to kitty (at least not since we had her). I didn’t know how she would act when kitty was in her space.
I took Gretel the last time I went to visit my multiple-cat-owner friend. Now, these cats are not your average. My friend is also a multiple-dog-owner friend. These cats are used to being around her 5 Pit Bulls. I used to take Chester over to her house to play and he didn’t react to her cats like he does to all the others. I think it is because they aren’t too excited about him and don’t run. As a puppy he even used to wrestle with one of them.
Anyway, this was to be the test for Gretel.
She definitely noticed these furry things WERE NOT DOGS. She didn’t chase them though. If the cat was in your lap she would sit beside you and stare intensely at kitty while wide-eyed and trembling. I think she wanted kitty so bad but didn’t know what to do with it.
It was hilarious to watch her too. She would start scooting closer and closer to kitty. At one point she would start sniffing kitty. Then the tasting began.
Gretel would start sniffing kitty’s head but then would put kitty’s ear in her mouth. Now kitty could care less about the dog (kitty was also twice Gretel’s size). Kitty would just shake his heat like “get that thing off my ear cause I am trying to enjoy some sleeps here”.
We were there for a couple of days and pretty soon Gretel and kitty were cuddling.
I suspect this WOULD NOT be her reaction to other kitties. Like I said, these kitties care about getting pets and cuddling in your lap – Not dogs. It would be interesting to see though. I just have to find a friend who wouldn’t mind if Gretel possibly terrorized her cat 🙂
Eventually we may get the chance to really test it out because getting a kitty someday is on our radar. I know though if we introduce them the right way kitty will be used to doggie shenanigans like my friend’s kitty and Chester and Gretel will learn that kitty is not for tasting.
How does your dog feel about kitties?
