Little Dogs Hiking With the Big Dogs

So, my best laid plans to get a bunch of weiner dogs together to hike didn’t work out. Maybe it’s the weather this time of year or maybe they can’t keep up on the type of hikes we prefer. As the “hikes” I planned for the Seattle Dachshund Meetup group got shorter and flatter, we decided to look elsewhere for hiking company.

I decided that maybe bigger dogs (or at least ones with longer legs) were more our style. I decided to try organizing hikes for the Seattle Active Dogs Meetup group I belong to. Our first hike was last Sunday. We hiked up Little Si again.  Not a new trail for us but one of our favorites in winter.

The weather was in the 20s which is almost the temperature at which the dogs turn into pumpkins but we decided try and make it a go anyway. I should have expected snow on the ground since we have been getting snow and sleet at sea level this week but I didn’t. Luckily, I pack like a cub scout and was prepared for any conditions…for about three days 🙂

We had a much better turnout for the hike with this group. There were two yellow labs a pug and a Chihuahua/jack Russell mix….and Chester and Gretel of course. Chester and Gretel would have led us whole way but we mingled with the pack and mixed it up a bit to talk to different people.

Up, up, up we went. Chester and Gretel cleared the rock as easily with snow and ice on them as they did when the trail was dry and bare. There were no 20 mile and hour wind gust at the top like there was last time we hiked it. The cloud level was pretty high and the views were great.

Our lunch break was short because it got really cold, really fast once we stopped.  We had just enough time to grab a snack and snap a few photos before heading back down.

The biggest issue was for me on the way down. The dogs pull me and when the trail is covered with ice that can be precarious, as you can imagine. No falls for me this time though.

We prefer to hike with other doxies when given the opportunity but for now hiking with the big dogs will have to do. Besides, then we can show them that two short little wieners can kick their butt…or at least keep up.
