Thank you for your website and for your knowledge and interest in Dachshunds. We have a 12 yr old mini- Wired hair Doxie who’s my valued hiking buddy. He’s had a couple of bouts of IVDD back when he was about 5 yrs old. I’m a big believer of crate rest. He recently had an issue with pancreatitis that he thankfully recovered from after a stint in the hospital.
I did think that this mini- was going to be a foofoo dog but right after we got him I found out that he was a hiker and a go getter and very interested in car rides and adventures.
What is the best way to help toughen his paws? I’ve used a paw spray with limited results. Booties don’t fit. He’s doing shorter hikes but if he does a couple of hikes a week, I’d like him to recover faster if possible. Thank you.

We’ve tried the paw sprays too and I feel like they wear off fast. I prefer to use Musher’s Secret Paw Balm because it soaks in. Walking him on pavement sometimes will help toughen his pads too. I know that can be a challenge because my senior dogs always started to like walking on hard surfaces less and less. You can also try the PAWZ rubber booties if his paw pads are getting chafed, although the booties can get holes on them when used on a rough surface (but it’s not super easy). Good luck.
