Our Story, Our Love
I have been in love with hiking since I was a teenager. After college I inherited a dog. I wanted a dog really bad but had my heart set on a Rhodesian Ridgeback – a big dog. I ended up with a funny looking, little Dachshund. I didn’t know that people didn’t normally hike with their Dachshunds and neither did Chester. We hiked, ran and traveled our way to 8 years together. Through that time our love and trust of each other grew.
In Chester’s 8th year I fell in love with a little spotted brown Dachshund on Petfinder. I asked the rescue A LOT of questions about her. By now I knew that, although most Dachshund love to hike, not all Dachshunds are as active as Chester. I didn’t know what I would do if we ended up with one that didn’t since hiking was such a big part of our lives. A day after we got Gretel we decided to jump right into the deep water and took her on a 6 mile hike, up hill (ok, not both ways), in snow (there was still 2 feet of snow at the top).
She hit the ground with gusto and never slowed down. I was blown away by her enthusiasm. It was that moment when I decided to finally start a blog. For years I had heard people’s surprised comments when they saw Chester and I at the top of a mountain and now they were going to be doubly shocked. YouDidWhatWithYourWeiner was born in that moment of joy.
How We Will Save Animals
Our blog is about being active, not animal rescue. Although I hardly ever talk about needy animals, it is an issue that is in the forefront of my mind. Gretel came to us through an amazing rescue called Motley Zoo Animal Rescue and I am always looking for ways to give back to them.
The winner of a Petties category receives $1,000 to donate to the non-profit 501c3 shelter or rescue of choice. We are choosing Motley Zoo Animal Rescue.
Motley Zoo has been operating on a volunteer and Foster basis for the past 4 years and recently placed their 1,000 pet in its forever home. They were voted a Top Rated Non-Profit in 2012 and have won several other awards.
Their long-term goal is to revolutionize the way that animal rescues operate to save more animals and become a mentor and model for rescues everywhere. In their 4 years, they have only ONCE received a donation check of $5K and received a check for $1,000 only a few times. The money from me would help a lot of animals with surgeries and to find homes.
How We Need Your Help to Make it Happen
There are four nominees in our category. We are up against some stiff competition so we REALLY need your vote to win.
You can vote by visiting the Petties website and clicking the “vote now” button near the top.
You can log in to vote using Facebook or Email and it’s quick and easy. ONE VOTE PER PERSON IS ALLOWED PER DAY. I am asking you to vote for us once every day through the end of July 2013. You can also help us out by sharing the voting link on Facebook or Twitter and ask people to vote for us.
I know this is a lot to ask but you would be helping our dream come true of making a huge difference in the lives of rescue animals.
Thanks. Chester, Gretel and Jessica
