There are many reasons to get out with your dog and go for a walk or hike. Maybe your doggie has gotten a little thick around the middle. Maybe it’s you that have gotten a little thick around the middle. Maybe you just want to live a healthier lifestyle.
If you are thinking about starting an exercise routine or getting back in shape then I say there is no better training partner than your dog. Think of owning a dog as having your own private boot camp that is ready to go whenever you are.
You don’t have to focus on YOUR fitness or weight, you can do it for them. When you exercise to improve your dog’s health it is usually easier to stick with it because you are doing it for them. It’s just a plus that you also improve your fitness.
A healthy dachshund is a happy dachshund and one that lives longer with less health problems. Overweight dachshunds are at greater risk for developing back problems and other ailments. Food is only one piece of the puzzle for maintaining a healthy weight. They also need regular exercise.
When you think about it, people and dogs aren’t that different. Sure, we walk upright and most of us aren’t as hairy but regular exercise also helps us maintain a healthy weight, have less health issues and live longer.
The hardest part of any exercise routine is getting out the door and nothing is a better motivator than your doggie whining and giving you the sad eyes.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your dog and go.

We walk Jan every day, usually twice a day. So we’re doing our part.

Good for you! As hard as I try, I can’t seem to get out every since day. Usually it’s the rain that crushes our motivation.

We agree! We are all the most happy when we’re outside with Gus getting exercise. We were able to walk at two different (beautiful) parks this weekend and Gus was SOOO happy!
Hope you had a great weekend! 🙂
