It was so nice last weekend that we got out and spent some time at the dog park. Gretel was zooming around playing with other dogs. Chester even got into the action today. After playing for hours we figured they needed calories and deserved a special treat.
We stopped at Whole Foods on the way home to get something to eat. While I was shopping the freezer section I spotted Yoghund organic frozen yogurt treats for dogs. I was intrigued.
I think we have seen this stuff, or something like it, around at some doggie festivals but I had totally forgotten about it. Itβs was only$5 for 4 cups so I thought I would get it for them to try.
There are several flavors like Banana & Peanut Butter, Blueberry and Vanilla and Apple and Cheddar but we picked the Papaya and peanut Butter. This non-fat yogurt has probiotics to aid your dogβs digestion just like regular yogurt does for people.
Chester has eaten ice cubes that have fallen on the floor a few times but that is just because he thought it was real food. I wasnβt sure how they would react to such a cold treat.
I was hoping because they were frozen the treats would last a while. Chester and Gretel licked away for about 5 minutes and they were already half gone. It was funny because Gretel was super intent on eating hers as fast as she could but she was shivering the whole time. Maybe she needs to wear a jacket when she eats these treats π
I put them on a towel on the floor so they wouldnβt slide around as much on our wood floor. I also didnβt know how messy they would be and I didnβt want to clean up a sticky mess afterward.
They werenβt messy for the dogs to eat. They only got half way down in the container before I took them away. Chester and GretelΒ had no problem getting their little noses into the container but I could see it potentially being difficult for dogs with big, or flat, noses and short tongues.
After further exploring the product website we saw that Yoghund had been reviewed by Phetched.com too.
When all is said and done these treats are a fun novelty and might come in handy if you are hanging outdoors in the heat but we wonβt buy them regularly. They justΒ aren’t practical or necessary for us.
What WOULD be a cool use for them though is a summer ice cream social for our Dachshund friends. Ooooooh! Now there is a fun ideaβ¦β¦β¦

We have purchased frosty paws for a special treat. We have to take it out of the container because I bet the 2 brown dawgs would eat the container along with the treat. π I’d like to try blueberry flavored Youhurd for them because they really like blueberry cookies. But it would just be for a special occasion and if I ever get to Whole Foods. π
Ice cream social sounds fun!
adventureweiner says
I bet a bigger dog would likely try to eat the cup π They are pretty small.

This is certainly a treat only for special occasions. I am sure it is enough calories to equal a weeks worth of treats. Gretel needs to watch her girlish figure ya know π

My cousins dogs loooove ice cubes – they think it is the best treat ever. They would probably be willing to do backflips for some frozen yogurt! But yeah, they’d probably just swallow the entire thing whole, cup and all.

We haven’t found that kind here, but I get Frosty Paws as a special treat every once in a while in the summer. An ice cream social sounds like a blast!
Nubbin wiggles,

We have Frosty Paws here too but haven’t tried them.
Kristen says
We havent tried the Yoghund, but we tried Frosty Paws with Bailey when he was a puppy. Like you, I only let him eat 1/2 of the cup the first time. 5 minutes later he threw it all up and it was the nastiest throw up I’ve ever had to clean up from him. Never again lol
adventureweiner says
Oh yuck. I don’t blame you.
Kas says
Is it people edible? π
Kas says
Or I guess I should have said, can people it? Don’t want to sound cannibalistic here … Lol. And cute, cute pictures. They always look so happy.
adventureweiner says
It probably is but I wasn’t brave enough to try it π

That yogurt honestly looks yummy enough for humans to eat! If it’s made with all-natural ingredients, it probably is. π

I am skeptical about peanut butter and papaya. I am not sure that is a good combo.

My guys get plain yogurt with their food sometimes (like once every 6 weeks). Instead of buying the fancy doggy frozen yogurt, I bet I could get by with freezing the plain stuff in an ice tray for a special outdoor pupsicle. π (Your comment about putting Gretel in a coat next time she eats ice cream was funny.)
adventureweiner says
I thought about freezing my own yougurt too. The main difference is that this stuff is lighter and fluffier than I imagine regualr yogurt that was frozen would be. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though.
According to Gus says
I love the synchronized licking photo – you could tell they thoroughly enjoyed their treat!
I’ve seen these before, but we’ve never tried them. I have a feeling Gus would like them – he sneaks a lick or two of our ice cream whenever he gets a chance!
adventureweiner says
That was my favorite photo too π
I am certain Gus would love these.

I love the photo of them licking in unison! I haven’t seen this product before, but it looks like something SlobberDog would enjoy immensely. I can’t begin to imagine the nasty after-slobber though! We’re going to have to look for this!
adventureweiner says
I think it would be very slobber producing π

Oooh, frozen yogurt! I love the little individual cups they come in. Chester and Gretel look like they were enjoying their special treats a whole lot. I don’t think I’ll be able to find anything of this sort in Singapore – I’m wondering if it’ll be possible to make something similar from scratch…
adventureweiner says
It’s just frozen yogurt for humans but without the sugar and with a different flavor I think. I don’t think freezing regular yogurt would be quite the same because it won’t be fluffy but I bet it would still taste good.

Interesting review. I may have seen these frozen yogurts before, but I didn’t realize they were sold at Whole Foods. We went on a crazy hot hike yesterday, and I was worried that Toki overheated. This would have been a perfect post hike treat… As it was, we mixed up an enormous bowl of ice water for her, and I gave her a few bites of my own ice cream.
adventureweiner says
I think they would be great treats for after a hot hike! π
