Two Washington State creators teamed up to create a series of whimsical Dachshund children’s books that that inspire kindness and imagination.
Writer Kizzie Elizabeth Jones (Edmonds) imagines stories that use her favorite dog breed – the Dachshund – and other animals to model and honor kindness, compassion, collaboration, and diversity.
“I hope each time the books are read, seeds are planted to further the cause for a gentleness of spirit for all humanity and nature,” said Kizzie. “Picture it: a world of friends delighting in the whimsy of life, bringing out the best in one another. I can think of no greater legacy.”
Her first book How Dachshunds Came to Be won first-place awards in the Tall Tales category of Readers’ Favorite, the National Indie Excellence Book Award for Cover and Graphic Design, and New York’s Beach Book Festival.
She also won first place for nonfiction writing from the Write on the Sound writers’ conference.
Kizzie teamed up with artist and illustrator Scott Ward (Bellingham) to bring her story to life through beautiful, full-color images with character.
His illustrations and paintings of people, animals, and stunning landscapes, are characterized by bold color, careful attention to light and shadow, and graceful lines.

A Tall Tale About a Dachshund and a Pelican – How a Friendship Came to Be
In this charming sequel to How Dachshunds Came to Be, true friendship is not just about looking past each other’s differences … it’s about discovering and celebrating those differences.

The Dachshund Coloring Book
This Dachshund coloring book is a companion to A Tall Tale About a Dachshund and a Pelican.
It features the same heartwarming story and illustrations except that the illustrations are line drawings.
This means a child can fill in the colors they see in their imagination while hearing the story, which can allow them to more fully connect with the message.
A Tale About Dachshunds in Costumes – How MORE Dogs Came to Be
Dachshunds in Costumes is a creative story that gives a lighthearted explanation for how the different breeds of dogs came to be.
A troupe of dachshunds plays dress-up in strewn-about vegetation after an autumn storm.
Just like young children, they love their new costumes and don’t want to change.
Through the power of love and magic, they stay in their costumes and overnight become other dog breeds.
As with Jones’ previous books, we see the gift of self-acceptance in this story.
This is Kizzie’s newest book and is currently available in both English and Spanish.

About the Author
Hi, I’m Jessica. I’ve been studying the Dachshund breed since 2007, owned 3 of my own, and shared in the lives of thousands of others through their owner’s stories. When I’m not sharing what I know on this blog, you can find me hiking, camping, and traveling with my adventurous wiener dogs.
